CVT Belt

The CVT belt: the steel belt that runs between the two pulleys of a continuously variable transmission.

Design diagram only, not a product photograph.

The belt row

The parts table lists one belt row under CVT-only parts: CVT Belt, with the note that the market also often calls it Chain. The assembly row note says the CVT assembly is the pulley-and-steel-belt type, which makes the belt the defining transmission element of the standard CVT on this site. A belt page therefore has to do two jobs at once: describe the belt itself, and stop the reader confusing it with the chain row, which is a different row with a different note.

A CVT belt runs between the primary pulley and the secondary pulley. As the pulleys change their working diameters, the belt rides at different radii, and the ratio changes without steps. That is the whole working description this site gives, because the table gives no belt dimensions, no material grade and no rated load, and this page does not invent them. The belt-sizes guide explains what a buyer should ask instead of assuming a size from a name.

Belt, steel belt, chain: keep the three names straight

Name on this siteWhat the table says
CVT beltThe general belt row
CVT steel beltSteel-belt page for the belt row; the assembly note is pulley-and-steel-belt type
CVT chainA separate row; a minority of CVTs use chain drive

If a supplier or a catalogue calls a part a chain belt, ask which table row is meant before ordering. The belt-care guide and the slipping guide both start from that question.
